I'm not sure where these images were taken but it does look beautiful doesn't it?

Those mountains are looking quite lovely right about now and don't even get me started on the sunshine.

Looking at these images I can almost feel the warmth.

I can almost feel the freedom of being a kid.

I can almost feel the sense of space.

These images could easily sum up my childhood-warmth, family, fun, and carefree.

January is my least favorite month and it seems a lot of other people feel the same way.

I always seem to find myself in a funk and this year has been worse than those in the past.

Even my Kris has noticed.

He tries his best to bring me out of it but come on, January really has nothing going for it.

It's just cold, overcast, and dreary. I don't mind the overcast skies necessarily.

It's the cold that I hate...which makes me want sun...which then makes
me hate the overcast skies.

(Today we got a small amount of sun and I think Kris thought I had lost my mind as I shouted for joy.)

Honestly, one of the few good things about these cold months is the snuggles I get.

Yes, those are worth it.

Snuggles (and a good nap!) are just the cure for those January blues.

Tea Time. Flashback Friday.

Playtime with the siblings.

We appear to be having a tea party on what looks like a warm day.

I'm the one in the back preparing the tea it seems

(as you can see, my hair has started to grow back after this debacle).

My siblings are the ones in front, awaiting my next order I'm sure.

I don't remember this specific day but we had lot's of days like this...

playing at Grandma's, playing house, etc.

I do love though that my sister and I are wearing high waisted shorts.

Has that style made a comeback yet?

Anyway, aren't my siblings just the cutest?

I could just kiss those little chubby cheeks of Maggie's and little Tanner, the only boy at the time. Poor guy got sucked into all things girly whether he wanted to or not.

Oh well, he turned out...okay...

The Dreaded Haircut. Flashback Friday.

Yes. This is the dreaded haircut.

My grandmother and I seem to be sporting similar haircuts.

However she was an older woman whereas I was a young girl about to start kindergarten.

Not okay.

My mother gets made fun of to this day about cutting it.

I get made fun of for wearing it. But again, kindergarten age people. I didn't really have a say.

At least hair grows right? And grow it did. Away from that mistake.

This photograph was taken in Florida at my great grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.

I don't remember much about that night to be honest.

I remember other parts of the trip, like when we went to Disney World.

But I remember very little about that night.

I do remember an African American woman serving food and watching her as she did.

I was mesmerized by her for some reason.

I remember wanting to go swimming all night (the house had a pool).

I remember this specific moment of my grandma helping with the cake.

But that's it. Mostly I just can't stop looking at that hair.

Poor thing.

Dear Kentucky.

It's just a little snow.

Letting kids out of school early before we even see the snow is a little ridiculous don't ya think? Why I am concerned about this? I have no kids...This doesn't affect me...

But I'm afraid of what other states think about us.

This doesn't exactly show bravery and courage when we close school due to a sprinkling of snow. Heck (yes heck!) I used to climb up hill both ways in 5 feet of snow to school everyday.

Ok, it may have been just one way and I may or may not have been in a car (Thanks mom!)

BUT, we went to school anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is it's time to man up Kentucky.

Put your game face on.

It's just a little snow.

And just to clarify, all pictures were taken from the comfort of my own home as it is FREEZING outside and not because I'm afraid of a little snow. ;) Toodles!

A Red Jeep and Pigtails. Flashback Friday.

It's 2012. I cannot believe that for some reason.

Time seems to be rushing so quickly these days and sometimes it feels as if
I can barely catch my breath.

And then on the other hand, it feels to not be moving at all. Like I'm stuck in time.

Today I looked through old photos remembering (and sometimes not remembering)
certain moments.

So, for the new year I have decided to post old photos on Fridays and write down what details I notice, memories I remember/wish I could remember, etc.

The first Flashback Friday photo is brought to you by two little girls.
One is me of course and the other my sister.

We are close in age and those pigtails were almost a daily thing I believe until my mother got the brilliant idea to chop all my hair off. I'm still quite mad about that. Maybe I will post a picture of that one day. Maybe.

We were at my grandparents house, the owners of this little jeep.

They spoiled us rotten then and they still do today.

I probably demanded to drive, being the bossy older sister I was.

My sister probably gladly rode along, talking my ear off as she usually did.

To say she was gabby would be an understatement.

I remember riding that jeep around for what felt like hours but in
reality was probably a few minutes.

Kids have zero sense of time.

That one time we got stuck in Dallas

On our way to Utah we had the unexpected surprise of getting stuck in Dallas.

Our plane was delayed in Louisville and therefore, we missed our connecting flight. Lucky for us though the airline took great care of us. They checked our luggage for free and then put us in a super nice hotel with free meals. The next day we got bumped up to first class and have since decided that it is the only way to fly.

A lot of people assumed it was a hassle to us but honestly, we loved it. It was nice having one more day to ourselves before the holiday craziness started. A little mini date night away.

I am taking a little blogging break for the next couple of weeks.

Kris is done with school for the semester and we are enjoying some much needed time together.

I just wanted to say to you though, Happy Holiday's! I hope they are fantastic and filled with cookies, kisses, family, giving and much more. Not necessarily in that order of course although starting off with cookies is always a good start. Merry Christmas everyone!

What did you get in your shoes?

Every December 5th, on St. Nicholas Eve, Kris and I put our shoes by the fireplace.

The myth is that the elves will come and either leave you goodies or coal, warning you if you need to shape up or not before Christmas.

Kris grew up with this tradition in his German household and we have carried it on in ours.

We always give some fruit, something the person needs, an ornament and treat.

Kris cheated a little this year and gave me a vegetable instead of a fruit but I love artichokes so I'm happy. He also gave me mac n' cheese for my treat. Love that boy.

Kris had a birthday

Kris had a birthday.
He is 27 years old now.
I can't believe how time flies.
We met when we were 17-18 years old.
And now here we are...
Kris spent the day in school but when he came home, we went out to dinner and did normal birthday things.
Kris' one request for his birthday was eggnog cupcakes so that's what he got.
Happy Birthday love.
I'm glad you're mine.

Boots, Yogurt and Records

During Thanksgiving weekend my friend Manda came to visit us.
While she was here, we drove down to Nashville for a day to explore.
We hit up old record stores, print shops and of course grabbed some frozen yogurt.
I'm really disappointed though that neither of us bought cowboy boots... especially since they were having a buy one, get two free sale! We missed the boat on that one.

This past weekend I flew to Utah to celebrate my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.
They celebrated by getting married all over again. And when I say get married, I mean the whole sha-bang from the rehearsal dinner to cutting the cake. It was a BIG affair and so much fun. I wish Kris could have been there to see it. I arrived a couple of days early to help with last minute preparations as my grandma had not been doing well and therefore wasn't able to handle all the details. We spent those days shopping, ALL day. But I think it was worth it. The wedding was just beautiful. I particularly loved the ceremony. I think I cried the whole time. I didn't pull out my camera once (they had hired someone) so it was nice to just enjoy the day. I did however snap a few with my phone.

The past few weeks have been busy as usual and blogging has taken a back seat.But here is a little glimpse of what has been going on lately:
Brand new kelly moore bag ( I LOVE it).
Yummy cupcakes from Miss Kailee.
Our monster trunk for the trunk-or-treat at our church.
Trip to Trader Joes on the day of it's opening.
Lot's of studying at our house (13 plus hours a day...yeah ridiculous, I know).
Trips to Indiana farms.
Scrapping the frost off our car for the first time this season (boo!)
Raking leafs for four hours!
Office picnic lunch.
Dinner on the stove.

With winter coming so fast and the sun setting so early, we have mainly just been hanging out inside. I'm dreading the long winter already. How do you keep yourself busy during the winter months?

Huber Farms 2011

We went to Huber Farm last weekend to pick out our pumpkin for Halloween.
Last year we went a couple of times and it was quite warm, didn't even feel like Fall.
It was a lot cooler this year but still a lot of fun.
We actually got to explore the farmers market a little more this time and try the fabulous apple cider donuts. They were so delicious.
Next year we plan on going in the summer to pick berries and then maybe early fall to pick apples.

montgomery farms

last weekend we had a bonfire with friends at montgomery farms in Indiana.
it was one of my favorite things that we did last year and i couldn't wait to go again this year.
the weather was perfect and much warmer than last time which made it all the more enjoyable.
we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows and ate way too much.
it was so nice being able to enjoy the fall season and spend time with our friends.

these next few (although blurry) make me laugh. i just LOVE the girls i've met here. they are rad.

the last week in squares

the past week or so has been spent out-- eating out and going out.
kris said it best, i have one good week of cooking and one where i do nothing at all.
so we ate burgers and delicious eggs.
we studied one night at starbucks and ordered multiple hot chocolates.
we had our our typical date night at barnes and noble and laughed at jimmy fallon's book...again.
we went to a friends wedding in the temple. temple weddings are the best.
we had a bonfire with friends (more pictures to come).
when we did stay home, it was spent reading and catching up on our Fall tv shows.
we also snuck in my cousins state soccer championship game. thank you internet for making me feel close to home when i'm not.
it's been a good week.

sunday cooking

on sunday night we attempted another new recipe.
sometimes they turn out, sometimes they don't.
this one however was amazing!we made lasagna cups from this recipe here.
then kris decided to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch.
and we even fit in a two hour nap.

we tried a new frozen yogurt place and STILL nothing beats red mango.
we squeezed in a couple of photography shoots.
we celebrated my birthday with pizza and cupcakes.
kris bought me pretty things for said birthday.
we went to comfy cow with friends for further birthday celebration/we-haven't-seen-each-other-in-a-really-long-time-celebration.
we came down with colds. boo.
we grilled pizzas two nights in a row. so yummy!
went to the zoo with friends.
it's been a good couple of weeks...minus the colds...but still good.

fall has come to kentucky.
leaves have started to slowly change color and the temperature has dropped.
we have started wearing a few jackets and boots.
i love boots. it's one of my favorite things about fall.
i also love fall festivities and i can't wait for those to begin.

this weekend was really low key.
i guess most of our weekends are.
we spent friday night at norton commons eating gelato and exploring the neighborhood
(it's very similar to daybreak for you utah people).
on saturday we spent most of the day in the yard trying to get some grass to grow.
we also watched the utah/byu game and by watched i mean, i fell asleep an hour into it.
(cut me some slack, games don't start until 9:00 pm here).
on sunday we took our usual almost three hour nap and then enjoyed desserts with our friends.

a few random thoughts about last weekend:

we ate at five guys. kris has vowed to never return (too much grease he says).
also, kentucky is so pretty. i love you kentucky (most of the time).
i take way too many pictures with my phone. oh well, at least i am documenting something.
i got a brazilian blowout on my hair from miss kailee. i LOVE it. she does good work.
my husband also got a hair cut. he looks sexy.
it's good to be home.

saturday started off normal with usual errands and naps.
we even grabbed some lunch at costco with the wrights.
but it took a turn when a storm rolled through and hit us hard (for 10 minutes).
kris grabbed my rain boots, and started to move water away from the basement windows.
we survived the power outage though at that point. so we thought we were lucky.
on sunday however, as soon as we came home from church, the power was gone.
we lived off bowls of cereals for the next few meals and unpacked our fridge into coolers.
we were told to not expect power until the middle of the week.
fortunate for us, it came back on the next morning at 4:00 am.
let's just say, i am grateful for electricity.

nights on the porch

the temperature has cooled off in louisville.
and by cooled off i mean dropped down to 80 degrees which is completely welcome over the 100 plus degree weather we have been having.
it means the nights are a little more bearable and we are able to sit outside.
i love the view from our front porch.
i love the little bird that hangs on our house.
but mostly i love the man who takes care of it all. :)

backwards and lame

yesterday, we got a little bored.
we really wanted to do something fun as summer is almost over.
apparently we are pretty lame because we couldn't think of anything.
after much debate (i'm talking two hours) we decided dinner and ice cream.
again, lame.
kris even asked, "have we become this boring?"
so to make it not so lame, we decided to do dinner backwards.
we would eat dessert first, at comfy cow no less, and then eat dinner.
does this make us even more lame?
maybe.
but it was fun so i'm okay with that.

first of all, thank you for your sweet comments. it's been a rough couple of weeks but i am glad to be somewhat moving on from the situation. so, i'm ready to blog again.

my dad arrived yesterday to kentucky.
it's so nice having him here.
he and kris got right to work on the basement.
kris had already done all the framing and electrical up to this point.
in a matter of hours, insulation was in.
now they are working on sheetrock.
these are two of the hardest working men i know.
i am so proud.

my limit

i'm not one to write about trials and drama in our life.

so i won't.

for one, those that need to know...know.

but today, i hit my limit.

and sometimes it's nice to have an outlet.

the past year has been full of so many troubles.

it has made me wonder how many times can the heart break?

apparently there is an innumerable amount.

so today, i am finding comfort from this and thought i would share:

are you part of the heat wave that has taken over a lot of the country?
the past couple of days here have had a heat index of 115 degrees.
it's been hot, muggy and miserable.
needless to say, we have been staying indoors.
last week, before the wave, we walked ourselves over to mcdonalds for a cool down.
this has to be one of the best things about summer, ice cream all the time.
it's a good..no...bad..no good thing mcdonalds is so close.

the 4th of july was spent at our nations capitol.
we crashed at our friends, the summerhays, home.
kris had never been so it was fun to explore with him for the first time.
i absolutely love dc and kris quickly fell in love also.
we ate yummy food, went to a Nationals game, explored museum after museum, ate some more, went to georgetown cupcake, shopped, ate again, watched fireworks over the national monuement, hit up cafe rio, watched movies, went to Arlington cemetery to find my great grandpas grave, and ate more.
it was a gluttonous weekend.

on friday night, we hit up our usual date night spot at barnes and noble and listened
to random music. (i may or may not have been listening to this on repeat.)
we then met up with friends for dinner followed by a rockband party.
the boys then took off to a gaming party and a friend and i watched a movie and chatted until 2:30 in the morning.
it was a good weekend.

we went to the melting pot last night and celebrated cheese fondue week.
we decided to go all out and did the full four course meal.

magic kingdom is just that, magic.
it's our favorite park by far.
we have been to disneyland/world every year of our marriage thus far and we can't get enough.
disney does it right.

highlights include:
-waiting 90 minutes in line for peter pan. it's a highlight because i have an awesome husband who not only waits with me but gladly waits with me because i love it.

universal is stingy with bags and cameras.
it leaves us with very few images.
we saw a lot of shows in this park that i thought were hilarious.
kris made fun of me the whole time because i laughed so hard.
we also rode that crazy roller coaster in the background of the first image. it completely knocked the wind out of me but it was pretty awesome.

...that harry potter was awesome.
...that butterbeer creates the best mustaches.
...that the roller coasters were fun and nauseating at the same time.
...that simulator rides are overrated.

alligator lake

while in florida we stayed with my aunt and uncle (who are really my great aunt and uncle...but we never use that term). we visited them just over two years ago and ever since, i have been dreaming to stay with them in their guest suite. they have a beautiful bay in front of the house and alligator lake is in the back. gorgeous! and yes, we saw alligators. daily.

here is one that got really close. moving in towards the ducks.

kris was watching an alligator that went onto the neighbors lawn. he then proceeded to walk over there with my uncle to check it out.

we took spring break seriously this year and headed down to florida for some sun.
ten days away can certainly rejuvenate a person.

this weekend was like most weekends.
we did our grocery shopping.
we cleaned house and gutted the basement.
watched hgtv and movies on netflix.
we played words with friends.
we read books.

kris served his mission in ukraine.
i have a brother-in-law who also served in ukraine.
i have a brother who is from ukraine.

needless to say, we have strong feelings about that country.
i myself have never been but i hope to one day go. it's on our list.
a temple was recently built in kyiv and ever since word broke about it, kris has been
itching to get back.
he shared this video with me today.
he met the first kid on the video while on his mission.
i loved it so much that i thought i would share it with you.

cousin visit

last weekend my cousin came to visit us.
we love her.
we spent the weekend hanging out, playing games, watching arrested development, eating food and being just plain lazy.
we also may have made a late night run for ice cream cones.

one of the best things we did over the break was go tubing.
the mountain was beautiful.
light snow was falling.
it was warm (although not according to my sister).
and we were in good company.

well. it's almost february.

it feels a little late to be blogging about christmas now.

i'm not happy about it.

we were so lucky.

it's been chilly lately.
when it reaches that certain chill, we refer to it as 'butt sauce'.
kris has strange terms for a lot of things and one day (last year) i was trying to one up him.
thus the term, 'butt sauce'.
don't ask where it came from because i don't know.
inappropriate? maybe
hilarious? we have gotten a few giggles out of it.
we have also passed it on to a few others who have taken it into their regular vocabulary.
i won't mention names (*cough* my mother-in-law and sister).
just you wait, you'll be saying it too.

it means curved cake and is traditionally made during the christmas season.
kris helped her out.

past week happenings

this thanksgiving was a little different. good, but different.
it was strange going from big families down to having just three people.
to be honest, it was a rough day for me.
but (for the first year ever) i was able to watch the entire macy's parade on tv and i loved it.
we spent the holiday...
lounging
enjoying outdoor walks
shopping (bought four pairs of shoes!)
putting up christmas
eating turkey
shopping some more
eating more turkey
reading
seeing HP7
having a pie party with friends
and eating more turkey.

and it's safe to say that we will be eating a lot more turkey in the days to come.

lights

the holiday lights were turned on at the summit this past weekend.
we obviously didn't know what that meant until we went.
we missed the band but we did see some fireworks as we drove in.
we shopped at a few stores.
grabbed hot chocolate at starbucks.
observed the christmas tree.
shopped a little more.
then headed home.

p.s. that's my sweet mother-in-law with us. she is in town for awhile. we love having her here.

we had a special guest with us this last weekend.
the brothers went to the utes game but the rest of the weekend was spent lounging, cozied up on the couch in front of the fire.
we ate lots of food.
played silly games.
laughed, A LOT.
had good conversation.
took naps.

(i seriously missed his other half).

it was a beautiful weekend.

happiness is a mood, not a destination.

someone who i think has super cool style and is living a super cool life posted that on her blog today. she wrote about the ups and downs she is having and it made me realize that everyone has their struggles. sometimes it is easy to read blogs and think that person has no problems. and then it's easy to look at your own life and be ungrateful for what you do have. but happiness IS a mood. it comes and goes.

my life isn't peachy all the time. i have struggles (more than i'd like to admit) but i'm grateful for those struggles because they make me better. it's not always easy to remember that but they do.

so thank you katie. thanks for telling me something i needed to hear today.

Insanity

*picture of date night (over a week ago) at barnes and noble. it has absolutely nothing to do with this post.

the past few days, maybe week, the hubs has immediately responded to everything he says with what he 'thinks' i will say. truth is, he has been mostly right.

he informed me today that after four years of marriage, we are no longer unpredictable...or at least i am not. he claims this is not a bad thing. instead it is just a matter of fact.

i'm determined to change this.

it is now my goal to not say what he thinks i will say even when i really want to say it. make sense? who knows how long this will last.

according to einstein, the same thing over and over again while expecting different results is called insanity.

as my husband would say at this moment, "ahhh, it's starting to make sense."

we went pumpkin hunting again last weekend.
sometimes it takes us multiple times until we find THE perfect pumpkin (either that or we didn't have cash on hand the first time).
we fed the animals (and by we i mean everyone else but myself).
we searched for pumpkins (while i enjoyed the yummy, yummy lighting).
and we finished it all off with dairy queen ice cream (heath and oreo shakes in case you were wondering).

we searched for pumpkins last weekend at the farm.

to please certain readers, here are a few shots of one room in our house.
it is so nice to finally have the dining area put together and actually have somewhere to eat.
i've always hated formal dining rooms but since we don't have an eat-in kitchen, this will have to do for now.

i truly love how it has come together.
my favorite parts about the room are the chairs that we re-upholstered in toile fabric, the pebble gray paint color, the chalkboard wall, the light fixture, the rug, the white curtains...okay... so i like it all.

i also love the fresh flowers (a birthday gift). if only the table could have them all the time. sigh. maybe someday.

anyone want to come over for dinner?

conference weekend

whirlwind

for the past week my parents have been in town and it has been just as the titles says, a whirlwind. they have painted three rooms (including ceilings), painted doors and closets, changed gold hardware to silver, installed hardware on our kitchen cupboards, put leaf shields in our gutters, tore out bushes, removed bricks from our yard, hung pictures, lights, hooks, curtain rods, etc., created a new pantry unit with more storage, re-organized my closets and cupboards, did laundry, raked leaves, washed windows, spray painted my vintage finds, and they managed to fit in a round of golf, shopping, and birthday celebrations (don't ask me how they do it). i can't even begin to express how grateful we are. my parents are go-getters and they have certainly started to make this house fill more like a home. we love them.

this picture was taken last night at my birthday dinner where we went to celebrate at PF Changs. i know i look drunk but we attempted three times and so this is the best one. or maybe i was just a little hammered. guess you'll never know. anyway, just want to thank everyone for the wonderful birthday wishes. i don't like writing long posts but here is a big THANK YOU to you all.

p.s. yes, i will post some pictures of the new house. it's starting to come together now. i'm so in love with it.

it's been awhile since we had a his/hers photo post. since we moved here, we haven't been so good at taking them. but last friday we did remember as we were at the movies seeing eat, pray, love. have you seen it? we liked it. it made us both want to give up a year of our life and just travel to fascinating places. we both want to go to italy and bali but decided that india was out (due to just plainly not being interested). i also decided that i totally believe in her "eat whatever you want/no carb left behind" theory. anyone want to join us in italy for pizza and gelato until we are absolutely sick?

as med students, not every date night can consist of fancy dinners and shopping trips (as much as we'd like them to be). this week we kept it simple and took a nice walk around the park, followed that up with frozen yogurt, and then headed home to watch several hours of HGTV. we are complete addicts and we aren't afraid to say so.

it was a good evening.
